A word that seems to pop up quite a bit is prestige and this, ultimately is what the gatekeeper is most concerned with. Their livelihoods depend on it. Being "inside" the gate is not sufficient to maintain the value of the goods, it also has to be asserted that what is "outside" the gate is worthless. Which, of course, is a delicate balancing act because everything was outside the gate at some point.

Whether you like dancing violinists is subjective, however, more often than not, being inside the gate is the death of complete artistic freedom.
