Australia is lurching to the right in a similar fashion to America. "Elites" trying to consolidate their cash and power on the back of the "Quiet Australia" base, ie. true blue Aussies suspicious of left-leaning excess.

Yet, even in conservative circles, where they don't like to say it out loud, migration is understood as an important economic and cultural driver.

Democracy in Australia is also in better shape than is the US and while Australia isn't free of racism and bigotry, it's typically more laid back.

In the past two decades, many colleagues have been immigrants from India and China and our discussions certainly reflect what you're saying.
