Fascinating stuff. When I was growing up in the suburbs, one of my friends lived in a house previously owned by one of the children. It was uncharacteristically grand, surrounded by streets of brick veneer.

And when my father in law moved to Tasmania, he bought one of the former company houses on the Cadbury estate.

Cadbury also had a similar community oriented business model. I wonder why chocolate attracts this sort of thing.

But as you say, ego always gets in the way at some point.
