For the past few decades the MSM (and the "real" journalists that work there) have been on a steady drift from reporting to analysis AKA opinion. The internet has accelerated this. This suits the corporations for a number of reasons. Opinion is cheap. Reporting is expensive. Investigative reporting is really expensive. Then of course, they get to craft the desired message more directly.
When I look at Tasmanian newspaper from the 70s, which I do from time to time, the difference in tone is startling.
