Great article, Janice, touching on issues relevant to all creatives. All big business, publishers included, are increasing risk averse. They’re more interested in fostering monopolies than creativity.

The media landscape has radically changed since the sixties. There used to be a handful of pathways to an audience, now there a hundreds. No wonder the publishers want the writers to work this out for them. Yet, this also points to publishers providing less value to writers.

And finally, in this media landscape, everyone becomes a writer and by extension a business person. This isn’t to say a writer needs to be on Tik Tok, but you’ll be wanting to a least have a plan.
