I'm not skeptical of carbon offset and I think it can have real benefits in terms of habitat restoration for wildlife which is also important (so native species, not pine plantations). However, your point about reducing consumerism is spot on. When those in the West out consumer some Africans by a factor of fifty, it's clear over consumption, not over population, is the bigger problem.
