It may not care whether we live or die, but nature compels all living things to survive, flora and fauna alike. The two imperatives of survival within any species, individual survival and collective survival, need to be balanced. Human pride likes to imagine that there is more going on than this, when I believe any claimed higher purpose is usually just a manifestation of the individual survival imperative.
