Taking inspiration for Alex Markham’s recent reflection on Dexy’s Midnight Runners, another band jumped into my head that seemed to fit the bill.

The Cockney Rebel, later known as Steve Harley & The Cockney Rebel once most of the original members had vacated, were not well known outside the UK, well at least not that well known in Australia.

Before the name change, the band released two strange and beguiling albums, The Human Menagerie and The Psychomodo. Led by Steve Harley they featuring a theatrical demeanour, and were often decked out in shiny suits and makeup, making them a natural for the glam label.

It is a label that Steve Harley detested.

Often mentioned in the same breath as David Bowie, to some, he was a superstar in the making. It was not to be.
