One of my favourite conversation starters when I'm with a group I don't know that well is "Have you ever saved someone's life?" In the city you mostly get blank stares, though once a lady did tell me she saved a man's life.

In the country? Almost everyone's got one and inevitably it is a man saving another man's life or a woman saving another woman's life. Burning buildings are never involved.
