Particularly relevant to Australian culture at the moment, as many "ordinary" Australians try desperately to find some level on Somewhereness, a strange irony within the colonialist project.

Tasmania has to highest level of Somewhereness in Australia. You can still smell our convict heritage in the centre of Hobart and it is not uncommon to hear someone say they're a seventh generation Tasmanian. No one ever says they're a seventh generation Melbournian. I was cleaning out the shed on the weekend and found my dad's Hawthorn FC membership from 1956. He grew up in South Camberwell, just next to Hawthorn and could perhaps claim some genuine Somewhereness.

I also see a political connection to the likes of MAGA and Australia's One Nation where previous class grouping (left/right) have all but collapsed.

Great article Alex. I'm glad to see someone still has a memory and an appreciation of history. You've broken it down beautifully and it provides some great insights into our current circumstances.
