Phew, a lot of versions to listen to! The Max Roach version is amazing, particularly the Abbey Lincoln vocal, which was not common for a lot of the freer jazz crowd. Mingus did a few, like Eclipse, which I liked. It was common for jazz to have a long instrument section before the vocals came in, but starting with the vocals like this was most unusual.

Beasts of Bourbon definitely transported me back to the Users Club days!
