Ultimately, I think this is the only path that exists or has ever existed. History can distort the picture. You can look back at the 30s and go, wow, the surrealists, so creative. Yet for every surrealist there was hundreds of boring landscape painters paying the bills.

Perhaps today financial pressures make artists more risk averse, because real creativity is a risk.
