I feel this connects to that famous quote about economists: “If economists wished to study the horse, they wouldn’t go and look at horses. They’d sit in their studies and say to themselves, ‘What would I do if I were a horse?”

Is this the fundamental disassociation of our times? The desire to view humans as houses made out of bricks, where we can "aggregate" the bricks, instead of organisms made out of unreliable machines?
